Loren Bunnell's House September 20, 2007 The group gathered in the Pearl District for this month's tasting. Only Greg was unable to attend the tasting - he and his wife, Cami, were attending a fund raiser for the Children's Cancer Association. The two pre-wines were very different. The first was an Old World Chardonnay from Meursault, a 2005 Les Chevalieres, and the second was an Old World from Germany, a 2005 Kabinett from Schloss Vallards. The group then turned to the first red flight. Most agreed that wines 1 and 2 of this flight was acidic, had nice tannins and were complex. The second two, wines 3 and 4, were downgraded due to some sourness and unbalance. In fact, wines 3 and 4 ended up being the lowest scoring wines of the evening at 85 and 86 points, respectively. The second red flight were very similar - dark, chewy, chocolate, cherry, good balance, and good mouthfeel were some of the descriptors identified. The ratings on these four wines, all from D'Alba, were nearly identical. The highest rated wine of the night ended up being the 2001 Sciorio Barbera from D'Asti, Italy. Some thought this was a Bordeaux due to hints of saddle leather, chocolate and cherry, and cedar. And at $20 a bottle, it's also a good value. For the dessert wine, Loren shared a late harvest Viognier from California and a Zinfandel Port from Oregon. |
